closet space

I hate doing laundry. It's my least favorite house chore. And as our family gets bigger our laundry piles are not getting any smaller.

I mentioned to Ben last night as I was putting away {piles} of laundry that we needed more closet space. And hangers are always in short supply.

You see, our house was built in the 60's, and back then they didn't need as much closet space as we need now... w a i t. I got to thinking. Why?

And it hit me. We have way too much stuff! And our culture tell us it's ok. You need more, bigger, better, more!

As I look through my closet most mornings {and can't find anything to wear} I'm often reminded of a story I heard from Africa. Many people there {and in many other countries} have one shirt. Wow am I spoiled. And I need more closet space. Sheesh.

So I came to a conclusion, and I hope I can encourage you to do the same.

Instead of more closet space, purge. How many shirts are in your closet that you haven't worn for ages? Do you really need 8 pairs of pajama pants? Do I dare ask how many pairs of shoes do you need? When you get new clothes, give some of the others away. {Isn't it amazing how much clothing can 'depreciate' in value after it's out of the beautiful surroundings of a shop?}

Laundry will be much simpler if I can just downsize. Even if it just means not squeezing everything in the closet and constantly looking for empty hangers.

What do you think? Are you with me?

  1. Agreed! I actually purge 2x a year because I hate clutter :) The only thing I have issues with is gaining and losing weight, do you keep what doesn't fit now but might down the road?

  2. I am! :) I have been trying so hard to get rid of things rather than purchase and it's slowly feeling less and less crowded in my closet. Plus it just feels good to be a little more detached to the things I do keep. Good luck clearing up space in your closets!

  3. As far as clothes that don't fit... I think it depends on the day :) I may be in super-purge mode and say just get rid of it and worry about it later, or a smarter way to handle it would be just to put some in storage :) My maternity clothes from 2 years ago are still in my closet- yikes. When I go through those I'll probably just keep what I love and use a lot and give away the rest. Mostly I just want to live simpler and have less.

  4. I did this a couple years ago when Ken and I were short on space in our little tiny studio apartment with two babies. It was crazy tight in our closet, so I would purge it regularly. Now it is just a habit, if I haven't worn something for 6 months, its gone.

  5. I did a purge after having my baby and it was easier than usual. After not wearing any of my cloths for 9 months (well 6 months) I wasn't attached to them.
